About Bettis Preparatory Leadership Academy (BPLA)

Bettis Preparatory Leadership Academy, a tuition-free public charter school in Trenton, SC, provides an innovative concentration of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) for students in grades K-8. We aspire to build a learning culture that encourages and sparks ingenuity. BPLA is located in Edgefield County, South Carolina, near Aiken and Augusta.

JOB DESCRIPTION: PRINCIPAL

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Leads the faculty and staff in coordinating school operations, communications, leadership development, and accomplishing schoolwide initiatives and goals.

  • Communicates and models the BPLA mission and values to faculty, staff, students, parents, and community members; and promotes effective communication among all members of the community.

  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with the school community and promotes a cooperative spirit among the school’s personnel and parents to maintain a positive social climate.

  • Selects and recommends hiring school personnel with professional and educational backgrounds in alignment with BPLA’s mission and values.

 

Curriculum and Instruction

  • Understands the elements of BPLA culture and ensures its consistent implementation across the curriculum.

  • Sets and oversees the implementation of schoolwide strategies aligned with the school mission.

  • Supervises the implementation of educational, artistic, and instructional programs in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.

  • Provides for the faculty’s professional development that stimulates effective teaching and learning strategies.

  • Approves the selection of curricula, class schedules, assessments, graduation requirements, and all aspects of the school’s academic and arts programs.

  • Ensures that all instructional staff can access the training necessary to implement the curriculum effectively.

  • Evaluates curriculum and instructional programs and make modifications as needed to ensure continuous school improvement and adherence to college preparatory academic standards and artistic development.

  • Makes decisions about faculty selection, performance evaluation, discipline, and salary; hires and retains high-quality faculty through effective recruitment and retention practices.

  • Attend and present at Board meetings when requested.

 

School Climate

  • Promotes a healthy and equitable school culture in and out of school by encouraging a cooperative spirit and shared decision-making among and between administrators, faculty, staff, students, parents, and community members to enhance the educational and social climate of the school.

  • Empowers the Assistant Principal by providing direction, delegation, expertise, and accountability while retaining overall responsibility and accountability for results.

  • Maintains high standards of student safety and conduct and enforces discipline as necessary.

  • Cultivates parent engagement by participating in planned events, town halls, and orientations that promote the school/parent partnership.

 

School Operations

  • Assumes ultimate responsibility for the management and operations of the school in accordance with the law, administrative code, policies, and regulations.

  • Exercises authority over the behavior and conduct of pupils, faculty and staff, visitors, and other persons utilizing the school.

  • Supervises the creation of all reports, master teaching schedules, records, and other paperwork as required by the State Department of Education, Charter School Board, and the Federal Government, or paperwork that may be appropriate to the school’s administration.

  • Oversees the school safety programs, including building security, emergency procedures, and safety drills.

 

Admissions and Student Life

  • Oversees the admissions functions of the school, including recruitment programs, internal marketing, external outreach, and information dissemination, to provide a supportive transition for students through formal programs, activities, and peer support.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in education, educational leadership, or related field.

  • Experience working or leading in an artistic or arts-infused setting.

  • Three (3) years of proven and practical experience as a school principal.

  • Three (3) years of proven and successful classroom teaching.

  • SC certification in administration elementary and secondary schools or eligible for reciprocity in SC.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five (5) years of teaching experience and three (3) to five (5) years of experience as a school-level administrator.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Personal Characteristics: 

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Proven educational leadership in a school environment.

  • Provide leadership in curriculum development, program evaluation, staff development, school improvement, and supervision and evaluation.

  • Strategic thinking, effective problem-solving skills, strong work ethic, and personal and professional integrity.

  • Reflective learner who regularly evaluates his/her work with efforts to make progress continuously.

 

Salary and Benefits: 

  • Estimated $70,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year

  • Commensurate with experience, skills, education, and training.
